Voting Question: Car inspection problems... advice, anyone?

I have a '93 Honda civic, which I took to the service station to get inspected this morning, and after 6 hours the mechanic (who has been good to me) broke the bad news to me that i have a rack and pinion leak, master brake cylinder leak, need new rear tires, and a new timing belt. I have already poured more money into this car than the car is worth itself, and I think this would be the straw that breaks the camels back, but I don't have many options. He said the 2 things i absolutely need to pass inspection are the brake cylinder and rack and pinion, estimated over $1000. He helped me out by letting me take the car back before he ran it through and failed the inspection. I have barely enough money to get through the summer paying rent until student loans come in in the Fall, I absolutely cannot afford these repairs (i have max $500 in my bank account at a given time) and in the meantime i need something to get me to and from my internship job 9-5 every day. I live in queens NY, and park on the street, and will start getting tickets every day that the inspection is expired (it expires on friday, 6/19). I just don't know what to do at this point. Should I just try to take out some sort of fast cash loan (at probably ridiculous interest), do i even bother to get this car repaired (its dying soon either way), I mean if i look to take out a new car lease or something they all require like $2500 due at signing...regardless, I start losing money every day starting Friday by simply owning this car, with the ticket's I'll start getting...what the heck can i do?P.S. - I graduate college in May 2010 and will be making a 100k+ salary, and none of this will be an issue, but until then I am a broke college student. I only need the car to pass this one last time to get me to graduation.lol I will be graduating with a doctorate in pharmacy, so yea (SJU pharmacy school) more

Do I have any (and what are my) chances of getting into Harvard, UPenn Wharton, Johns Hopkins, Brown, NYU, MIT, Duke Yale, Stanford, CalTech, Babson College or Columbia Univ.? I know these are some of the nation's most competitive colleges, but I just want some advice and some knowledge on the position I hold as a "standout" applicant, or a Harvard applicant. Harvard has been my dream college for many years and I want to do as much as possible to increase my chances of admission into it. Also, I am not rich due to my parents being unemployed. So how will that affect me (positively or negatively)? I am currently a High School Junior (about to be a senior in Fall 2009). I am a Indian (Asian male born in US) attending HS in NYC. I know it's kind of late to ask this question now, but I want to pretty much see where I stand now as an applicant. My overall transcript GPA is a 94.50%. I have maintained all A's with the exception of 3 high B's ( AP US History which I am going up in for 2nd term, physical education and art) on my transcript. I just took my SAT's today and think I did pretty good in math (about 750), and I will have to improve my Critical Reading and writing score (a little bit). I took the Math 1 SAT II's and got a 660, and I will be taking 3-6 more in Fall 2009. My interested majors, in preferred order, are Neuroscience, Business/ Entrepreneurship, and Philosophy. I will go with any of these and would definitely love double majors if available. I continued studying at my JHS until 9th grade, and then I graduated from my JHS being the Salutatorian. My strong subjects are math and science, and have done very well on any standardized tests involving them. I have been a part of my school's yearbook committee, and have volunteered for above 100 hours in my school library and for above 700 hours at my local church/ temple. I have also received about 100+ hours from being a part of the ARISTA National Honor Society. I have done hospital rotations with the hospital associated with my school. I was part of a 10 week (once a week) gap year Medical Internship (called HPREP) at Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan, NY. I have taken a lot of college credit courses at CUNY Queens College and CUNY York College in Psychology, Sociology, Health (4 semester course), and Math Intro. to Probability and Statistics. I am also planning to take philosophy, writing, and maybe drama during the upcoming semesters. I have passed all of the classes I took with A's or B's. I have started working on my essays, and received some of my letters of recommendation (the recommendations are AMAZING!!) I have served in the Student Government of my school as Junior Grade Representative, and there's a 99% chance I'll be the Senior Grade Representative as well. For this Summer, I have applied for quite a few internships and will be doing math and/ or science [research] internships over the summer. My school doesn't offer many AP courses and doesn't offer any honors classes, but I am challenging myself with the toughest classes. This year I took AP US History, as that was the only one I could take. I will be taking AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP English next year. I am not sure but I might being doing the Queens Bride to Medicine program, in which I will take college level classes in Calculus, English, and Chemistry without any college credit. I am also looking forward to the Youth Justice Board gap year internship which is basically like student government in schools but having a great effect on the city and dealing with state officials. Next year I also want to join the Big Brother Big Sister club, the debate team/ mock trials, Yearbook Committee, Library Community Service, Health and Wellness Club, and I am looking forward to being president of ARISTA National Honors Society. I am also going to start my own club based on Vedantic Philosophies, and create a STAND organization group which will help with the genocide in Darfur. Also, if this helps- 2 of my cousins go to/ graduated from Columbia University. I know this was a lot of information and kind of long, but please help me with this as I am worried night and day about my admission into one of these colleges (ESPECIALLY HARVARD!!) Resolved Question: Okay, so am I being unreasonable or is what my mother did incredibly rude? VERY LONG POST?

Background: I live in Manhattan and am attending college here, my mother lives in Maryland. I just finished my finals about two weeks ago, last week I moved to a new apartment, and this week I've been busy at my internship, my college research dept., and I also have summer classes next week. This weekend was supposed to be my time off since I've been so busy/stressed for the past three weeks. So, yesterday, I get a call from my mother asking if she can come visit me in NY. I tell her okay, but I plan to be studying for my classes next week. She calls me back later and tells me that she and her friend are now coming. I reluctantly agree. She calls me back again and says she, her friend and her friend's daughter are now coming. Um...okay? Then she calls me back AGAIN, and says it's now her, her friend's daughter, her friend, and her friend's daughter's friend. Each time she calls me, more people are coming up from Maryland. Anyone who lives in Manhattan knows the apartments are small. Mine is maybe 1,600 sqft, if that much. I only have a two bedroom and I am NOT sharing my room. I assume she's sleeping in the spare room. The other three people are all going to be sprawled out in my living room. I get upset because, as I said, this was my weekend to unwind/study and she just invited the whole neighborhood over. I don't even know these people. I've only met her friend once and don't know anyone else she's bringing. SHE invited them. AND because they aren't from New York City, they're also all expecting me to play tour guide and take them around the city. Lastly, I got upset the more I thought about it and called her back and told her I didn't want all these people coming. In the middle of my rant, she tells me I'm on speaker phone and they all just heard me. Thanks, mom. So...am I being unreasonable? Or is she being rude? I'm extremely upset. more

Voting Question: Gearing up for Grad School-- help?

So.. as I sit at my desk, writing another paper as usual, I'm watching another semester fly by right in front of my eyes. I'm starting to realize that graduation isn't so far away at this point and I'll be starting my junior year of under grad next semester. I'm starting to consider different grad schools and I'm wondering what I should be doing now, instead of later, to prep for it. I'm an Anthropology major, Art History minor, Museum Studies minor at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. Let's just say it's not Ivy League... but I enjoy it. They offer Museum Studies classes and that has definitely kept me here. =D Anyway, my GPA as of right now is a 3.5. I've done a summer internship working with and researching historical costumes and I'll be going back in a week to help them install the exhibit. I'm working with the director in our Museum on campus to create new exhibits for next year. I've bonded with everyone at the museum, as well as one professor in particular who I really enjoy taking Art History and Museum classes with. I've travelled to London and Paris to analyze different types of museums and art work for an art history class. I've also worked at a Children's Museum. What else should I be doing? God knows I might volunteer more, there are some positions open in my area for that, but it's a very difficult thing to do as far as money goes. What are Grad Schools looking for in an applicant? I mean.. besides all of the required tests and my GPA, what's going to set me apart from the crowd? more

Voting Question: How do I get credit for an internship if my university won't give credit?

I want to do an internship in New York, unfortunately as a result of labor laws I have to get credit for it. Now I don't care about the credit, so I was looking into any NY universities that will give summer credit for internships that are open to students from other university students taking the class. I know USC does it but I need one in new york cause usually it seems you have to go to a course once a week or something like that. Or else if someone has another way that I can get credit, I know I will have to pay for it, that would be a huge help. more

Resolved Question: With today’s economy, is it useful to still take part in unpaid internships?

With everyone pinching pennies, including myself, do you feel that it is still important to take part in unpaid internships? I personally have the opportunity to take a summer unpaid internship in Albany, NY (the capital building) and shadow a senator. I would have to commute 2 ½ hours a day from my home, pay for food and gas. Housing is covered, seeing as I’m only 21 and still living at home. What are your thoughts?? Resolved Question: AP classes and scores/chances for competitive schools such as MIT Georgia Tech and Purdue west lafayette?

I took 3 AP classes junior year (US history, physics B and calculus AB) and am taking 4 AP classes senior year (literature, physcis C, multivariable calc and micro or macro). I wanted to take other AP's but my schedule didn't allow so I self-taught myself AP computer science A, biology, chemistry and will self-tech macro or micro. What do you think of this? Do colleges care is I self-tech myself some AP's and still get 4 or 5 as a score on the AP test? What do you think of this AP combination overall? Does it look good for competitive colleges such as Cornell, Geaorgia tech, MIT? I have 2200 SAT, 3.5 gpa unweighted, I took/plan on taking SAT subject tests in literature, US history, Math level 2, physics, biology and chemistry. For the ones I already took I scored at least 700. Basketball team since freshman yr, chess club since freshman, track team since junior year, camp couselor for 1 summer in which I went to camp to as a kid, internship at NASA for 1 summer, made my pwn website using what I learned from AP comp science A which I self-taught, leadership program which included trip to foreign country and they talked on the radio about us or wrote a article about us in the newspaper ( I forgot which one), 150 hours comm service, ran in races in which money went to help charity, tutor kids in english/math, live in NY. I am really worried about my GPA but I hope my AP classes make up for it a little. Resolved Question: I feel terrible... I guess I made a HUGE mistake.

My GF of 7 months and I were doing very well. She did not have a ton of friends at school so we spent a lot of time together because of that. I started to not hang out with my friends as much, I tried to give her what she wanted and be with her at times when she needed me and tried to give her a somewhat fun college experience. However, she had an internship in NY that was coming up this summer and I was doing an internship back at home and as college got closer to ending and we got closer to her going to NY all she seemed to talk about was how excited she was to leave our college and how she never wanted to come back etc. I started to feel like I was getting pushed to the back of her mind and felt like I was going to be forgotten or left behind. Also, she has had problems with alcohol and I mean that she would drink to much and then do something very stupid with a guy etc. This also worried me, so when she left I guess I was a little overbearing. We had planned out that we would talk a little in the morning, at lunch and at dinner. This is what she wanted to do etc. However, I started to miss her a lot and I kind of lost it, so for the last 2 weeks I would text her a bit more than than normal but it was mostly because I just wanted to keep our relationship together... Long Distance was new to me (not for her) and I was still adjusting to the situation. So onJune 2 we got into a fight over the phone and broke up.... She said I was not supportive and overbearing.... I admint, i messed up and realize that but like I tried to explain to her, this was all new to me and when she did the same thing at school when I was trying to hang out with my friends but I knew it would take adjusting etc. so I never got mad. Anyway, I have tried to show her I can be supportive, I have apologized a million times over, sent her a starbucks giftcard here and there so she can grab coffee for work etc. We hardly talk now and I will see her in 21 days when we get back to school. MY question is, 1. Did I mess this up badly, I mean is this all my fault? 2. If she loved me, should she have been a little more patient? 3. Girls, what would you have done here? 4. I was dating my long term GF all the way up till june 2. On May 7th we were leaving for the summer to go to our internships... Hers was in ny and mine was in nc. Anyway, I guess I was not as supportive of hers for the first week when we were down there and it was mostly because i missed her but she took is very hard and decided to break up. From June 2 till the end of june we still were technically together though and I was being as supportive as possible...sending her small little gifts calling her and is she was stressed letting her vent but she seemed to just get more and more angry with me. One day at the end of june she called and said we were never going to get back together and that she hated me etc. so a few days later a took another girl out and when she found out i did that she called and said i broke her heart and that she never meant that stuff... Now though, she refuses to talk to me at all. I will see her again in late August for school. How can I get her back?? more

Resolved Question: Another messy question about my engaged lady friend?

Ok everyone, here is a bit of backstory for those who werent involved in the question a few weeks ago. Im living in NY for the summer, with a 33 year old woman who I have fallen head over heels for. She is engaged to a heroin addict, and completely fails at saying no to anything. She uses when she is around him (hes in LA) and he is doing it, but I can tell that she is not addicted, since she never does it for the long spurts she is at the house in NY. For the past month and a half we have been having at it with a relationship and all that good nastyness, with her re-assuring me that its ending with her fiance. She doesnt appreciate him dragging her down the path he follows. His parents, and her pay for all of his bills, tickets, and his habit. Shes done with it. Erm, forgot to mention stuff about myself. Im 21, one year from graduation with an engineering degree from Virginia Tech. Im working an important internship here in NY for this summer.Her friends and family adore me, and trash talk eric at every chance they get. Even when she passed out at her friends wedding (that she took me to), her friends all looked overjoyed that she was with someone who actually treated her well. The bf before the heroin addict was slightly abusive, and that lasted 8 years. They all say how happy she has been since ive been around, and have giant smiles on their faces around me. Her family is supporting me too, although they do not know that she actually got engaged to eric out in LA. They just think im the next bf. Anyways, last week her father wanted to go out to LA for a business trip and she set the flights and everything to go. She is pretty much his personal assistant, he is extremely well off and because of that she doesnt actually have any real sort of job, he doesnt allow her to. He didnt know eric was living in LA now or anything like that, he hates eric.So, while she was there, she said she was going to find closure with eric because she couldnt just end it over the phone. I agreed, its pretty heartless to tell someone over the phone that you cant marry them. Well, her being the pushover that she is, and eric being the manipulative ass that he is, he dug his nails in deeper through guilt trips and murdering her self esteem, that I had been building up and fixing for awhile now. She ended up using again, and although she arrived in NY yesterday night, and Ill pick her up to bring her home today, im unsure of how to handle the situation between her and I. I knew that relations were a major possibility, so im not angry. She didnt cheat on me, I jumped in while she was still engaged. Id be a hypocrit to be mad over that. But, im still head over heels for her and want her to let him go and be with me. Last I talked to her, she is conflicted and wants us both. Should I run in the opposite direction, or hold on and hope for the bestIve spoken to a few of her friends again this past weekend and they have all said they dont understand what pamela is doing, and that the thing with eric must be over soon. They were at a bar with eric and her saturday night and eric looked miserable and messed up, like something wasnt right there. He knows about my involvement, but it was more than that that was upsetting him from what they say. Like she is choosing me over him? Rawr -_- I really freakin like this woman. Ive got a future, She is attracted to me, I take her to do fun things ALL the time (in my budget, im a poor college kid), and she takes me out to do fun stuff thats well beyond my budget (i dont care about her money or anything, dont get me wrong, but its really nice to have someone take me to do all sorts of things that I cant afford or do on my own). If i lose this woman to a unemployed, uneducated heroin addict than my self esteem is going to be shot.. lolAnyways, Ive had a good time rambling on about this. Ill be checking it quite a bit today while im at work to get an understanding of all of your opinions before I pick her up from her fathers apartment in the city tonight. Currently, my plan to deal with everything is going to just be to let her sort things out on her own and decide for herself what she wants, and Ill take a sideline until then. The problem comes in where eric is pressuring her to buy him a plane ticket to come out to NY and stay here for the next two months while im here, and probably attempt to kick my ass considering I got pretty pissed at him on the phone when he called me to bitch me out and i then proceeded to describe to him in great detail how his fiance.... tasted... -_- not the brightest thing ive ever done, but too late for that now. I feel bad saying this.. but I kinda hope he overdoses on smack and passes on. Hes gotten pretty close in the past apparently.He really isnt good for pamela, he uses her to pay for his things, hes tearing her away from her family and friends because "he doesnt like them" and "they dont understand him", he shoots her up every chance he gets, and to be honest... neither of them really understand any sort of real responsibility, and with the way pamela was raised, she needs someone who can run her finances and take care of her when her father is no longer here to handle it. If eric and her got married, and her father passed on, control of the entire sum of money would pass on to them and I have no doubt eric would spend it all in less than a year, and then bills would pile up and she would lose everything she has. Then, with very little work experience and options to make a living, things wouldnt go well.... She is an art major, her art is beautiful, but its hard to make a career in art. He is a smack addict, careers in that arent exactly respectable.well, you definitely hit the nail on the head tgregory in your analysis of her. I dont really want to meddle anymore with eric, so im dropping any possibilitys of that now. As for her, she isnt as damaged as you are making her seem to be. Her esteem is shot, and her emotions are a mess, but medically she will just be sick again for a few days and recover, and psychologically she is actually fairly well off. She holds herself up very well, and when she is around me she rarely shows any sign of being distraught. I thought she was a damn stable person until she left for LA and all this went down. I was hoping for more answers, but oh well.. Ill stay in this and see what I can do to help her out and hopefully be in the picture for long enough to find out what I want. As for the offering marraige... lol... ive only known her for a month and a half, and while there is potential, i refuse to ever bring that up before at least the one year mark, with anyone. more

I am a 21 year old college student taking an internship in NY. I am origionally from Virginia. I am currently living with a pretty amazing woman. She is beautiful, fun, eccentric, and all kinds of things that I look for. She is also about ten years older than me, but that doesnt seem to matter to either of us. We hit it off fairly well (and fairly quickly, ill spare everyone the details.), however, there are two problems. I leave NY at the end of the summer to go back to college, and her fiance who lives in CA will be comming into NY next monday, but only if he is able to be completely clean from his drug addictions. Now, all of this being said, and me being from a much smaller area that NY and also not used to this type of situations, I'm fairly concerned about how the next few weeks could possible go. Im in some pretty deep shit if he manages to be clean and finds out whats been going on. And... ontop of that, I have a major crush on the woman. Any advice would be great...Im living with her because I needed a place to stay for my summer internship and she was the only person that I found that was willing to take me and both of my dogs, who was also nearby the house. Her house is enormous, so there is plenty of room. Im totally aware that long distance doesnt work, so thats not what I need advice on. Honestly, my worry here is about the fiance if he is able to get clean and come visit. Im kinda worried about what this person might be capable of, because I do not know him, and im sleeping with his fiance. Also, I do care for this woman, and I do not want her fiance dragging her back down into drugs, which is a possibility. Just to be clear, I am not trying to get advice for anything involving turning this into a relationship, I know that isnt going to happen and Im ok with it. Im really just hoping that he is unable to break away from the heroine, because then i'll have avoided this entire mess....I think im going to go stay in a hotel or something for a few days while he is in town, if he manages to get here.And as for the using me... im totally fine with that. She is the most attractive woman I have ever met, and has made my summer so much more interesting than i could have ever imagined. My life was pretty boring until now. Ok my GF has an internship in NY this summer and I am home in NC doing an internship. Anyway, it will be 3 months till we see each other again and we really want to make this relationship last. So far it has been about 12 days and it seems we are struggling. Since we have been home, she always gets mad when I do not text her back within like 10 minutes when she texts me. When I text her though, I am lucky to get a text back within an hour or longer.
